Completely useless . . . unless you consider art useful.
I got the idea for these from that cool magazine Somerset Life. I purchased some old vintage spools on Ebay. I bought some silk ribbon from Flights of Fancy Boutique. You should check out that site – it has a lot of different and unique things – including stuff you cannot find at your average craft store.
I then used really thin paper – the kind you use for paper piecing - the weight of newsprint – and printed various inspirational words on them using a vintage typewriter font – I don’t remember where I got it – I downloaded it from the web.
I cut out the words and made little flags out of them. I then took corsage pins (vintage hat pins are sold on Ebay – but were too expensive- $10 a pop) and used pliers to bend them and then put on a bead with some jewelry glue so it was glued up by the “pearl” on the corsage pin. I put the flags on the corsage pins.
I filled the holes in the spool with hot glue and covered the ends with pretty paper or sheet music and then covered the tops with “sugar” glitter. I put the corsage pin down the hole – and b/c of the glue it stayed in.
